Jan’s passion is the architectural engineering – the interaction between technology, building materials and structure and the architectural form itself. He is highly valued by his clients for his skills as an integrator between the architectural aspirations and the potentials that they hold with respect to system engineering and technical innovations.
Starting his career with an apprenticeship in a joinery and glazier’s workshop, he draws his satisfaction from making. He enjoys working with all parties along the value chain from the materials suppliers to the builders on site to realise the ideas and visions of the designer.
Jan started his career at Arup a decade ago at the company’s headquarter in London. Since 2008 he is based in Berlin leading the Europe Materials Practice and since 2011 he is also holding the Firm’s Research Portfolio in Europe.
Being an architect with a deep technical understanding of the building process and products, Jan has steered a number of successful product developments and innovations together with industry partners. Examples are the “Thin Environmental Cladding”, a unitised facade system out of composites developed together with Building Lab DK, Danish architects 3XN, Fiberline and Permasteelisa and the bio-reactive SolarFeaf Facade, an innovative facade system for facilitating closed-loop systems.
Jan enjoys lecturing and teaching, his present commitments include a role as professor on Global Sustainability and Environment for CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) in Berlin.Go Back
