3rd Annual Ticketing Innovations Summit: Interview with the chairman Ralph Gambetta
1. Could you tell us more about your professional background and your area of interest in the ticketing industry?
Since my early professional activities, I have been involved ticketing and in particular in the development and evolution of Calypso technology. When starting this experience, it was unforeseeable that this work would contribute to what today is one of the leading ticketing specifications used around the world. Ticketing per se is one of the challenging topics in the public transport ecosystem as it is of transversal importance to many aspects of successful management of mobility.
2. What benefits of having smart ticketing for public transport you think is the most promising?
Smart ticketing allows a highly secured management of your ticket revenues, provides new ways of customer relationship management and allows new progressive governance and business models.
3. You were the speaker in our previous edition of Ticketing summit. Did topics that have been discussed, ideas that have been shared made a visible effect on the industry?
The previous edition in Lisbon reflected very well the technological landscape and its challenges. Most appealing was the insight into the Jakarta project which till today faces the question of integration of various technologies and transport modes.
4. What are the next steps for the Ticketing industry? Could you share your thoughts on where the industry might move or develop?
The ticketing industry faces the arrival of new technological streams like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and others. There is a need to better understand the impacts of them on the current ticketing ecosystem. For the transport operators, the challenges are to keep social inclusion relevant and adapt the current governance structure to upcoming business models like MaaS set by new digital platforms.
